DEMOCRACY DAY : UK BASED DEMOCRATIC GROUP HARPS ON BETTER
DELIVERY OF GOOD GOVERNANCE, AND THE NEED FOR POSITIVE CHANGE.
A LONDON BASED NIGERIAN DEMOCRATIC GROUP [NIGERIANS VOICE
FOR DEMOCRACY] has admonished leaders and followers alike, to be more committed
and patriotic to the Nigerian Project. This was conveyed in her democracy day
message personally signed by the convener of the group. In her opinion, Mrs Omolara Ayoade-Babatunde, the convener of the group believes that the
Nigerian nation has been polarized and divided along ethnic and religious
lines. She opined that there is quick
need for positive change.
In her words, she said "As we celebrate nineteenth year
of democracy in our country, Democratic Governance has been polarized along
divisive ethnic and religious lines. It is indeed worrisome that active
politicians are not adhering to the ethics of politics. Our political parties
since May 29th 1999 have no distinct ideologies with internal squabbles and
cross carpeting that is not healthy to our Democracy.
She also said “It is high time we looked once more on the
need to build a unique Democratic structure in the country at this critical
period of electioneering year. Our journey to Nationhood and Democracy from
1960 to date has been characterized by upheavals and turbulences, yet we must
cherish our commitment to remain a united country, in brotherhood and respect
for one another.
Furthermore, Mrs
Omolara opined that our ethnic diversity should be a strength and not a
weakness. Nigeria can make positive impact, if all hands are put on desk.
"We must also appreciate the strength and value of our diversity, with due
understanding and recognition of the interests of various ethnic nationalities
in our hearts"
Finally, she enjoined all and sundry not to forget the
contributions of our Heroes past. The people who have laid down their lives and
made sacrifices for the development of Nigeria. She said, “In our efforts to
promote and protect democratic institutions, we should not forget the roles and
sacrifices of our gallant armed forces in the checkered history of
nation-building"
NIGERIA SHALL RISE AGAIN.
