Marouane Fellaini pricing himself out of Marseille move, Manchester United need to withdraw the contract offer, just in case

Marouane Fellaini is running out of time at Manchester United. He has been offered a new contract but his disrespect for the Old Trafford club by saying they left it too late to keep him has in effect left him in a position where even the majority of the supporters who wanted to keep him at the club now want him to leave. The expiry of his contract cannot come quick enough for some. Fellaini has had a lot of interest from the continent over the past few weeks, the latest club being Marseille.

Fellaini was tipped to be signing for AC Milan last week with suggesting a deal was close but then news broke that Fellaini’s demands were scuppering the deal. A deal could still be done with the Italian club in the next month though. Marseille have made their interest clear in the Belgian, who will be playing for his country in the FIFA World Cup in Russia this summer, which could, if he plays well, open up more avenues for himself during the summer.

It has been suggested that Fellaini has rejected a new contract from United, something that neither the player nor the club has confirmed so far. French newspaper L’Equipe has reported that Marseille chief Andoni Zubizarreta met with Fellaini last week but his wage demands were too much got the Ligue 1 club, something that seems prevalent with other clubs that have been linked with the player. I don’t know what it is that makes Fellaini think he is worth the money he is asking.

He has his uses and since signing for United on deadline day during the summer of 2013, only Jose Mourinho has managed to find a suitable use for him with both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal seemingly failing to get the best out of the Belgian. Because of his uses and the threat he offers in the opposition box, it was a reason I would have liked him to remain at the club but now a change would be a good one. United need to move into a new era which will continue their improvement, developing the boring playing style they have been accustomed to this season.

Fellaini would be a good signing for any team, any team, just come and get him. The one thing that could show him that his demands are crazy is the fact that no club signs him this summer and he learns the hard way. Thinking you are one of the best players in the world and being one of the best players in the world are two different things. United need to ensure the contract renewal is off the table in case Fellaini runs out of options and signs a new contract – the discontent from that will be something to write home about.

United need to ensure they are not held to ransom by Fellaini, as once his options are off the table, he may be interested in signing for United again. That is not what we all want at all. United need to move on. There is a new era brewing and something needs to be done about all the deadwood this summer, Fellaini being part of that. Despite having an impact, like he has at times this season, it is not the be all and end all of a Manchester United player. Having players who do more for the team is what is needed and Fellaini’s impact, other than being a threat, is not enough.
