Bayern Munich
forward Thomas Müller believes that Mohamed Salah should fend off
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d’Or this year.
Many have suggested as such, given how
successful Salah’s debut campaign for the Reds has been, with the
Egyptian having scored 44 goals in all competitions last season.
Ronaldo won the prestigious award last
year to draw him level with Messi for all-time wins on five, and
although Messi spearheaded a phenomenal Barcelona domestic season and
Ronaldo led his team to the Champions League final, Müller thinks Salah
is more deserving of the crown.
Talking to Mirror Sport, Müller had this to say on how it is the Egypt international’s time for glory.
I think that Mo Salah was very impressive. Maybe if Liverpool can win the Champions League title, he’s a big candidate.
The whole world is looking for a new Ballon D’Or winner. Leo Messi and Ronaldo are outstanding, but the performance of Salah this season was also outstanding. I think he has a great chance.
Despite Germany going into the World Cup
as the defending world champions, having taken home the glory in Brazil
four years ago, Müller claims that Germany don’t have anyone worthy of
winning the Ballon d’Or, although he did praise Manchester City’s Leroy
Sané. He continued;
He [Sane] did very great job in the Premier League. But I think in Germany we don’t have that single player that is better than the rest.
We have many players that have the talent to play a season like Salah, but I think you have to win titles as well to win the Ballon d’Or.
But in the end to win the Ballon d’Or is not the biggest thing you can reach, because when you win titles with your team, it gives you so much more intensity and good feelings – that, in my opinion, is more important.
