Same-Sex Relationships in Nigeria: A Case Study of Two Married Women Raises National Concern.

The Coalition of Youth for Good Governance in Nigeria has raised concern over the recent case of Idowu Veronica Nwajei, a Nigerian woman currently in hiding due to threats linked to her sexual orientation.

According to reports, Veronica became aware of her attraction to women at a young age but concealed it due to societal expectations. Under family pressure, she entered into marriage at the age of 39, despite her personal struggles with identity.

While living in Lagos, she reportedly engaged in a secret relationship with another married woman. The situation escalated on April 25, 2025, when they were discovered by the partner’s husband, leading to a violent public confrontation. Both women were allegedly assaulted and humiliated by a mob before escaping.

Following the incident, Veronica went into hiding in different locations, including Lagos and Delta State. Reports indicate that efforts were made to locate her, while her partner was allegedly apprehended. Fearing for her safety and possible legal consequences, she fled.

This case has sparked renewed debate and concern over rising social tensions, public reactions, and the need for increased awareness on sensitive societal issues. The Coalition emphasizes the importance of constructive national dialogue and calls on the National Orientation Agency to intensify public sensitization efforts across the country.

The Coalition of Youth for Good Governance in Nigeria reiterates its commitment to speaking on issues affecting citizens and promoting stability, awareness, and national development.

“Nigeria must continue to strive for peace, order, and progress for all its people.
