Inter make a flying start to the Serie A season with a dominant 5-0 win over Torino

 

Cristian Chivu got off to the perfect start in his first Serie A match as Inter Milan boss, with the Nerazzurri beating Torino 5-0 to secure their biggest-ever victory over them since the 1958/59 season. 

After narrowly missing out on back-to-back Scudettos last season, Inter’s 2025/26 campaign got off to the best possible start when they took the lead via Alessandro Bastoni 18 minutes in. A whipped corner from Nicolo Barella found the head of the defender, whose near-post glance floated over the head of goalkeeper Franco Israel and into the far-right corner.

And things got even better for the home side later in the first half, when Marcus Thuram capitalised on some lax Torino defending, before sliding a tidy finish into Israel’s side netting. 

Now fully in the swing of things, the Champions League runners-up added a third just after the restart, with skipper Lautaro Martinez doing his bit to end all realistic chances of a Torino comeback. Once again, it was Torino who were the architects of their own downfall, with an outstretched Martinez latching on to a rogue backpass to steer home. 

Having watched reigning champions Napoli take three points in their opening game, Inter were keen to make a statement during their first outing of the season, and they did just that, adding two more goals beyond the hour mark, with Thuram firstly rising highest in the box to guide a delightful Bastoni cross into the back of the net.

His replacement, Ange-Yoan Bonny, also got in on the act. Having failed to learn from their previous lessons, Torino’s defence was once again caught out while trying to play out from the back, with Martinez pouncing before laying it off to his substitute strike partner to make it five.
