Safeguarding champion Rafael Nadal has smashed out of the current year's US Open in the wake of resigning from Friday's semi-last conflict with Juan Martin del Potro on account of knee issue. 

Thus, the Argentine third seed, who was driving 7-6 (7-3) 6-2, will contend in his first Grand Slam last for a long time. 

The Spaniard, 32, had called for therapeutic help twice before hauling out of the diversion.

"It was troublesome for me to continue playing. I was in a lot of torment and it was anything but a tennis match," said Nadal. 

"It was one player playing and one on the opposite side of the court. 

"I abhor resigning however to remain one more set out there playing like that is excessively for me." 

Del Potro, 29, last contended in a Grand Slam last when he won at Flushing Meadows in 2009.
