Rabiu Kwankwaso abandons planned protest over insecurity

Erstwhile Kano State Governor and Vice Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has distanced himself from a purported social media message alleging that he and his supporters were planning a nationwide protest over the worsening security situation in the country.

In a statement posted on his verified X account, Kwankwaso described the message as false and urged Nigerians to disregard it, insisting that neither he nor his political associates support actions capable of undermining public peace and stability.

The former governor said his attention had been drawn to a message circulating across social media platforms claiming that he was mobilising supporters for a protest against rising insecurity.

“Our attention has been drawn to a message currently circulating on social media falsely claiming that we are planning a protest over the rising insecurity in the country,” he said.

Kwankwaso stressed that while insecurity remains a serious national concern requiring urgent attention, he does not endorse any action that could result in the breakdown of law and order or lead to the destruction of lives and property.

“We do not support any action that could lead to the breakdown of public order or the destruction of lives and property. As responsible leaders, we remain committed to peaceful and constructive approaches in addressing national challenges,” he stated.

He reiterated his commitment to democratic principles, noting that elections remain the most legitimate avenue for citizens to express dissatisfaction and pursue political change.

According to him, democracy provides the framework through which grievances can be addressed without resorting to violence or civil unrest.

“As committed democrats, we firmly believe that the ballot box remains the most legitimate and effective way to express grievances and seek change,” he said.

Kwankwaso also expressed confidence in the electoral prospects of the NDC, maintaining that the party was well positioned to secure victory in the forthcoming elections through lawful and peaceful means.

“Our party, the NDC, is confident of securing a resounding victory in the upcoming elections through peaceful democratic means,” he added.

The former governor warned against the spread of fake information capable of misleading the public and creating unnecessary tension in the polity.
